The Perfect Kids' Bathroom: Answering Our Most Asked Questions
Designing a bathroom for kids is an adventure into imagination and colour with a balance of practicality. Over the years, we’ve enjoyed transforming dated and non-functional bathrooms into vibrant, kid-friendly spaces. From playful themes to practical storage solutions, here are our top tips for creating a bathroom that will make your kids want to brush their teeth. (Just kidding, that will always remain one of life’s struggles!) But we can help you design a bathroom that will grow with your kids and make practical sense along the way.
Here are the answers to some of our most asked questions about kids bathrooms.
DRAWERS OR DOORS?
When it comes to designing storage that kids will actually use, simplicity is key. The more straightforward and accessible the storage options, the more likely children are to use them. Consider incorporating drawers with specific purposes to make organization easier for kids. For example, designate a small, shallow drawer for toothbrushes and toothpaste, ensuring these essentials are always within reach. Larger drawers can be used for items like hair care products, making it simple for kids to find and store their belongings. By assigning specific uses to each drawer, you can create a structured and intuitive system that encourages children to maintain order in their bathroom space.
ONE SINK OR TWO?
Opt for two sinks If you have over 60 inches of counter space. However, avoid the temptation to squeeze two sinks into a smaller vanity at the expense of counter space. Kids need ample counter space, especially since they may not be able to reach overhead cabinet storage easily. Ensuring sufficient counter space not only makes the bathroom more functional but also provides children with the necessary room to organize their toiletries and other essentials. This balance between sink availability and counter space is crucial for creating a practical bathroom environment for kids.
WHAT’S THE RIGHT VANITY HEIGHT?
We don’t recommend installing a vanity that is lower than the standard height (34-36 inches), but you can still make it kid-friendly in a few other ways. Consider a wall-mounted vanity with at least 14 inches of clearance underneath, which allows enough room for a step stool to be pulled out easily. Alternatively, custom vanities can be designed with a solid lower drawer that doubles as a step. Additionally, think about the faucet: we always recommend a single-lever faucet for kids to turn it on in a position that mixes hot and cold water. This ensures ease of use and prevents the water from accidentally getting too hot. These design choices make the bathroom more accessible and functional for children without having to compromise on standard vanity height.
MARBLE OR PORCELAIN FLOORS?
If you have boys, you will want to write this down: urine stains marble. Enough said.
Porcelain floors, on the other hand, are much more resistant to stains and easier to maintain, making them a more practical choice for a kids' bathroom. Porcelain is also highly durable and available in a wide range of designs and finishes, allowing you to achieve the look of natural stone without maintenance concerns.
TUB OR SHOWER?
While a deep tub with jets might seem appealing to an adult, it's best to skip the expense in a kids' bathroom. Opt for a low tub with a simple design, which makes it easier for assisting smaller children. A low tub also transitions easily into a tub-shower combination as kids get older. If your children have outgrown the bath stage and are ready for a shower only bathroom, prioritize safety by using smaller floor tiles, such as penny tiles, which maximize grip and reduce the risk of slipping compared to larger tiles. This approach ensures a safe, functional, and adaptable bathroom space that grows with your children.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU RECOMMEND?
Hooks, hooks and more hooks! In a kids' bathroom, you can never have too many. Hooks can be used to hang towels and robes, making it easy for children to access their items and encourage them to keep their bathroom organized. Additionally, installing multiple hooks at varying heights ensures that kids of all ages and sizes can reach them comfortably, promoting independence and responsibility. Beyond their practical use, hooks can also add a decorative element to the bathroom, with various styles and colours available to match any design theme.
