Savouring Summer: Your Guide to Outdoor Dining

The days are getting longer, the evenings warmer, and the idea of eating outside brings about a calming and casual feeling in my house. There's something about the open air that makes it more enjoyable and social. I always look forward to the transition to outdoor dining; time to leave behind the formal dining habits of the darker months, and pretend (just for 20 minutes) that I am on a beautiful hotel patio.

When it comes to outfitting your outdoor dining space, there are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. Ensure your dining set fits your space comfortably.  A comfortable gap of 3’ from the edge of your table to the edge of the patio, or wall, will be enough space to move chairs back and forth.

  2. Opt for outdoor furniture specifically designed to withstand the elements. Be sure to read the fine print regarding recommended usage and maintenance.

  3. Invest in covers for your outdoor furniture to prolong their lifespan, and keep them dry on rainy days.  A simple deck storage bin is helpful to store the covers during the summer, and cushions in the off season.

Where To Shop

Outdoor living and dining is on the upswing, perhaps as a result of the pandemic.  Many online and local popular retailers are now offering a collection of outdoor furniture. If you’re on the hunt for an update, start by checking out these collections:

Hot Products For Hot Days

To elevate your outdoor dining experience, check out these products worth considering:

Outdoor Kitchen Carts:

Upgrade the functionality of your outdoor space with ready-to-go kitchen carts. The best part? No plumbing is required! Here are a few of my favourites:

Multi-functional Tray:

Make the most of your ottoman with a flexible tray from DOT Furniture that effortlessly converts it into a serving surface.

Cool Coolers:

Keep your beverages chilled with stylish outdoor coolers like the Demi Chill Side Table from Veradek or the Fieldbar Drinks Box from Hauser Stores.

Cordless Lighting:

Set the mood with cordless ambient lighting options such as the Poldina Pro Upside Down Cordless Table Lamp and the Cubic Teak Solar Lamp, available from Hauser Stores.

Dishing It Out

I personally welcome any excuse for new dishware; but much like the elusive spring jacket in Toronto, the summer season is short, and a good set will last you for years.  Therefore go for a set that has at least 2 sizes of plates, small bowls and is classic in color and design.  Outdoor decor has a tendency to lean a little too far into “florida floral” for my liking. I prefer to bring the colour and “pop” with napkins, real flowers, and the actual food!

One set that caught my eye is the Soleil 12-piece Dinnerware Set in Snow White. Its timeless design and durable construction make it a perfect addition to any outdoor dining setup.

Taste Of Summer

Let’s not forget the food! Here are a few recipes I’ve bookmarked for the hot days ahead.

If you give either of these recipes a try, you’ll have to let me know what you think!

The warmer days are just around the corner! Now is the perfect time to clean off the patio furniture and prepare for a summer of al fresco dining. With the right dining dishware, delicious recipes, and a few thoughtful additions, you’ll be ready for your own holiday-like moments.
